So, the switch 2 huh? Love it or hate it, it is pretty technologically impressive. I personally love the thing (my wallet disagrees) as it has allowed me to take games I love on the go in a higher quality than the original Switch, which was aging like milk imo. It is an expensive console, I'm not denying that, and I'm not saying the Switch 1 sucks either, I still have a soft spot for that console, but I do still really like it. So, here's a small collection of my jumbled ass thoughts on this console.
Like seriously, has anyone even heard of this standard before the April 2025 Switch 2 direct? I know for sure I haven't, same with my friends. I know the technical reason Nintendo went with it, and I do agree with it to a point. But the Steam Deck let you use regular Micro SDXC cards and had NO problems (to my knowledge) so why do we need to pay double the cost for the same storage capacity here? I had a 1 TB card in my switch 1, and it ran me about $100 USD at the time. The only 1 TB Express cards are around $190-200 BEFORE tax and shipping and all that jazz, so I haven't bit the bullet and bought one yet, but it is getting kinda annoying downloading games on my slow ass dorm wifi (I think FF7R will probably take a day QwQ)
I don't like game key cards. Big shocker there, nobody does. "but Vermillion!" I hear you crying out, "all the other console manufacturers do the same thing with some disks, but I don't hear you complaining!" Because I don't have those consoles. It still pisses me off either way, but I don't have a PlayStation or Xbox so I don't really care to complain about it. Back to the point, I would actually like key cards if they gave me a REASON to buy them, but if I already have to download the game, and it's the same price on the eshop as it is at GameStop, I'm just going to use the eshop rather than wasting money on an uber or getting a ride from a friend and wasting their time. I wish more games were truly physical, I want a copy of Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy VII Remake on my shelf, but oh well I guess.
I have a lot of controllers. Wii controllers, fight stick controllers, garbage ass third party controllers, but the most used of my controllers are definitely my Switch controllers, so I truly mean it when I say the JoyCon 2 and Switch 2 pro controller are absolutely PHENOMENAL. The original switch's joy cons were small because the system istelf was small, makes sense, but it made it uncomfortable for me to use for long play sessions. Plus, mine started drifting only a few months after I got them, and after that I used the Pro Controller pretty much exclusively. The pro controller for the switch one is one of the nicest controllers I own, it's comfortable to hold, has a good battery life, and works for damn near every game I own. However, the switch 2 pro cntroller takes all of that and kicks it up a notch, in my eyes. It melts into my hands, the buttons feel great, it looks gorgeous, and the sticks are literally the smoothest I have ever used on any controller EVER. The joy con 2 are fairly similar in their upgrade, and they're a bit larger and more comfortable to hold.
None of any of what I discussed means jack if there aren't games you want to play. You could have the finest hardware possible, top of the line, and it would mean nothing if all you can play is fucking Chicken Shoot. Thankfully, the switch 2 has had a really good first year for games I like. At launch, I picked up a bunch of games, with the headliner being Mariokart World. I loved World when I first played it, but honestly it just hasn't had me wanting to come back and play more after I unlocked everything. I pretty much think this is just a me issue, as I know plenty of people love Mariokart World, but still. About a month later, Donkey Kong Bananza came out, and this was SO damn fun to me. The fact you could just go around and destroy pretty much whatever you want in this expansive world is still incredible. Yes I know it doesn't run at a perfect 60 FPS, but I honestly don't really care. It was a while before we got another new first-party switch 2 game (not counting Switch 2 editions, even though I bought many of them) but a few weeks before my birthday we got Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment! ...and I still haven't beaten it so I'll speak on it later. More importantly, we have a certain pink fella to talk about.
KIRBY AIR RIDERS. OH MY GOD. I mean, what do I even have to say? The game is absolutely gorgeous, it runs smooth, it has a good story, it's chaotic, it's fun, you can customise SO MUCH, it just leaves me absolutely speechless. I'm not even gonna talk about it more, because I'm gonna go play it
Metroid prime 4 was announced in 2017 when I was still in elementary school. I'm now in college and I can finally play it. Now I will admit, I don't really like the bike segments that much, but otherwise I fucking loved Prime 4. I wish I didn't have to wait as long as I did, but I'm glad I have it now. I still need to play Prime 1-3.
How the fuck did you make it through that. Like seriously, you actually sat down and read all that? I should give you a trophy or smth. Oh wait right, the conclusion. Uhhhhh I like the Switch 2, it has some problems but honestly I just like playing my video games on the go and this lets me do that. I like Cyberpunk on planes.
